A.M. Nair

(1905 – 1990) – (Kerala)

Aiyappan Pillai Madhavan Nair (Aged 85), also known as Nair-san, was born in 1905 and played a key role in the Indian independence movement in Japan. Nair received his basic education in Kerala but had to leave the state at 18 due to his involvement in protests against the Education authorities in Travancore. During this time, he also spoke out against the British.

Nair went on to study engineering at Kyoto University in Japan. After a brief stint as an engineer, he joined India’s freedom struggle as an individual and later teamed up with Rash Behari Bose. When Japan joined the Second World War, Nair helped establish the Indian Independence League in Japan under Rash Behari Bose. He also advised the Japanese government to bring Subhas Chandra Bose to Japan, and subsequently helped him in various ways.

In 1949, Nair founded an Indian restaurant in Ginza, Tokyo. He wrote his autobiography in 1982, entitled “An Indian Freedom Fighter in Japan: Memoirs of A.M. Nair (1982).” The book was distributed by Ashok Uma Publications with ISBN 0-86131-339-9. Nair was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure (Kun zuihosho) by Emperor Hirohito in November 1984. He passed away on 22 April 1990.

A film titled “Nair-san,” based on his life, has been planned and will be directed by Alberrt Antoni. The film stars Mohanlal and Jackie Chan.
