A.P.C. Veerabahu

(1915 – 2015) – (Tamilnadu)

A.P.C. Veerabahu (Aged 100) an Indian politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly, was born in 1915 in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India. He won the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly elections from Srivaikuntam constituency twice, first in 1957 and then in 1962, as an Indian National Congress candidate.

Veerabahu founded V.O. Chidambaram College with a vision to provide access to higher education to all, regardless of their caste, creed, or gender. He strongly believed that education was essential for individual, societal, and national development. He advocated for education that promoted the holistic development of individuals, who would in turn contribute to the moral and material growth of society and the well-being of humanity.

He aspired to create a just and humane society that respected human dignity, challenged unjust social structures, upheld the national legacy of diversity, secularism, non-violence, and national integration, and took care of the poor and marginalized.

Administering the college was not an easy task, but Veerabahu successfully overcame the obstacles and developed the institution. He established the V.O. Chidambaram College of Education in 1955, and in 1973, he founded the A.P.C. Mahalaxmi College for Women, as girls were not usually allowed to pursue higher education at that time. “Education should not be commercialized under any circumstances” was Veerabahu’s guiding principle, which he successfully implemented. Veerabahu passed away in 2015.
