Acharya Buddharakkhita

(1922 – 2013) – (Manipur)

Acharya Buddharakkhita (Aged 91) was born on March 12, 1922, in Imphal, Manipur, India. His parents were Vishnupada and Sailavaladevi Bandopadhyaya. In 1942, he participated in the Quit India Movement. After graduating from the Institute of Engineering Technology, Calcutta, he joined the Indian defence services and served in World War II. However, he resigned from his position to seek truth and freedom.

He became a monk in 1948 and traveled extensively throughout India. He also taught in Sri Lanka and Burma. Eventually, he established the Maha Bodhi Society in Bangalore to spread Buddhism. He passed away on September 23, 2013, in Bangalore, India.
