B. R. Ambedkar

(1891 – 1956) – (Maharashtra)

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (Aged 65) also known as Babasaheb, was born on April 14, 1891. He was an Indian jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer who fought against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits) and inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement. Ambedkar served as British India’s Minister of Labour in Viceroy’s Executive Council, was Chairman of the Constituent Drafting committee, and became independent India’s first Minister of Law and Justice. He is widely considered the chief architect of the Constitution of India.

Ambedkar was a prolific student, earning doctorates in economics from both Columbia University and the London School of Economics. He gained a reputation as a scholar for his research in law, economics, and political science. Early in his career, he was an economist, professor, and lawyer. In his later life, he became involved in campaigning and negotiations for India’s independence, publishing journals, advocating political rights and social freedom for Dalits, and contributing significantly to the establishment of the state of India.

In 1956, he converted to Buddhism and initiated mass conversions of Dalits. He was posthumously conferred with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1990. Ambedkar’s legacy includes numerous memorials and depictions in popular culture.

He published his book Annihilation of Caste on May 15, 1936, which strongly criticized Hindu orthodox religious leaders and the caste system in general. The book also included a rebuke of Gandhi on the subject. In a 1955 BBC interview, he accused Gandhi of writing in opposition to the caste system in English language papers while supporting it in Gujarati language papers.

A memorial for Ambedkar was established in his Delhi house at 26 Alipur Road. His birthdate is celebrated as a public holiday known as Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti. He was voted “the Greatest Indian” in 2012 by a poll organized by History TV18 and CNN IBN, ahead of Patel and Nehru. He passed away on December 6, 1956.
