Bhima Nayak, also known as Bheema Nayak, was a freedom fighter who fought against the British in the Revolt of 1857. The areas where he served as an inspiration covered Barwani to Khandesh in Maharashtra. The army organized by him constituted around 10,000 freedom fighters.
He is known as the Robin Hood of Nimar as he looted the British treasury and distributed the same among the poor people. He was arrested by the British and sent to Port Blair and Nicobar, where he was hanged in December 1876. In honour of the sacrifices made by him, Martyrdom Day is celebrated every year in the state.
