Birsa Munda (Aged 25) born on 15 November 1875 in Ulihatu, Lohardaga, Bengal Presidency, India., was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, religious leader, and folk hero belonging to the Munda tribe. He spearheaded a tribal religious millenarian movement that emerged in the Bengal Presidency (now Jharkhand) in the late 19th century during the British Raj, making him an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement.
Birsa Munda’s slogan, “Abua raj ete jana, maharani raj tundu jana” (“Let the kingdom of the queen be ended and our kingdom be established”), threatened the British Raj. On 5 January 1900, Birsa’s followers killed two police constables at Etkedih, and on 7 January, they attacked the Khunti police station, resulting in six deaths, including that of Birsa Munda during his trial in prison.
His portrait hangs in the Indian Parliament Museum, making him the only tribal leader to have received such an honor. He passed away on 9 June 1900 in Ranchi Jail, Lohardaga, Bengal Presidency, India.
