Dariyao Singh Thakur

(1795 – 1858) – (Uttar Pradesh)

Dariyao Singh Thakur (Aged 63) was born in Khaga, Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1795, to Thakur Mardan Singh, a wealthy landowner. He played a significant role in organizing the Great Revolt of 1857. He equipped rebel forces in the district with arms and supplies, and led them against the British forces in June 1857. He captured the Khaga Tehsil headquarters and the treasury, attacked Fatehpur, and defeated the British troops, killing a large number of British officers.

On July 11, 1857, he inflicted a crushing defeat on the British relief force advancing from Allahabad. However, the next day, the rebel forces suffered defeat at the hands of the large British force which was rushed to the battlefield from other places. Dariyao Singh managed to escape with his close associates and continued to wage guerrilla warfare against the British.

He participated in several battles against the British at Aung, near the Pandu River, and at Taraunha in District Banda, U.P. His allies in these battles were Tatya Tope, Raja Beni Madho, and Raja Madhav Rao of Karwi. His entire family, including his brothers, sons, and cousins, took an active part in the struggle against British rule.

Dariyao Singh, along with his son Sujan Singh, Brother Nirmal Singh, Cousin Thakur Bakhtawar Singh, and Thakur Raghunath Singh, was captured by the British. On March 6, 1858, they were executed by hanging at the same spot.
