G. S. Melkote (Aged 81) was an Indian freedom fighter and parliamentarian, born on October 16, 1901, in Berhampur, Orissa, India. His full name was Gopaliah Subbukrishna Melkote, and he was born on the auspicious day of Saraswathi Pooja in Orissa. Melkote completed his L.M.S. from Osmania University in 1927 and practiced traditional medicine combined with Yogic practices.
Melkote served as the president of the Indian Medical Association, Hyderabad branch for a while and also established the Patanjali Yoga Research Institute. He actively participated in various Indian Freedom Movement activities such as the Home Rule movement, Salt Satyagraha, and Quit India movements. Melkote passed away on March 10, 1982.
