Gulab Singh Sain

(★ – 1858) – (Haryana)

Gulab Singh Saini, the commander-in-chief of the army of the princely state of Ballabhgarh, was an Indian freedom fighter. His father, Jodh Singh, was also the senapati or commander-in-chief of Ballabhgarh’s army during the reign of Raja Ram Singh, the father of Nahar Singh. Jodh Singh had trained Raja Nahar Singh in military tactics, and upon Nahar Singh’s coronation, Jodh Singh’s son Gulab Singh was appointed as the new senapati.

On May 10, 1857, when English soldiers attacked Delhi, they faced a fierce battle with Gulab Singh Saini and his army. Gulab Singh Saini and his native soldiers defeated the English army and played a significant role in the coronation of Bahadur Shah Zafar as the emperor of India. On that same day, 10 May 1857, Gulab Singh and his native army forced the retreat of the East India Company’s army.

However, Gulab Singh Saini, along with Nahar Singh and Madho Singh, was hanged in Chandni Chowk, New Delhi, on 9 January 1858, after allegedly being captured by deception by the English forces. He passed away on 9 January 1858.
