Hrishikesh Bhattacharya

Hrishikesh Bhattacharya was born in 1915 at Barabandar, Dinajpur, now in Bangladesh. Hie father was zamindar Ramesh Bhattacharya and a member of the Anushilan Samity. He was studying Intermediate Science at the local college, but he gave up his studies in the middle of 1932 and went underground.

Hrishikesh Bhattacharya was arrested on 29 October 1933 near Hill Road Railway Station and was initially sentenced to death by the Trial Court. However, on appeal, the High Court commuted his sentence to 25 years of imprisonment. He was deported to Cellular Jail and took part in the hunger strike in July 1937, which lasted for 37 days. Bhattacharya was repatriated in January 1938 but suffered prison confinement at Dinajpur Jail for his involvement in the Tebhaga peasant movement. He was released in 1946 after serving a total of 14 years in jail.
