Ka Phan Nonglait

(Meghalaya)

During the era of U Tirot Singh, Ka Phan Nonglait was an early female freedom fighter from the Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, India.  According to records, as the British soldiers started moving out of Mairang village towards Nongkhlaw, soldiers of Tirot Sing heard the news and set a trap for the British soldiers at Langstiehrim.

Because of the heat of the day, the soldiers rested near the waterfall. The brave Phan Nonglait made the soldiers of Tirot Sing wait in the shadows while she provided the British soldiers resting at the waterfall with drinks. She then took away all their weapons and threw them under the rock hole of the fall before leading the soldiers of U Tirot Sing. As a result, they easily captured the British soldiers.
