At the young age of 12, Kali Bai was a native tribal girl who sacrificed her life to save her teacher from the brutal atrocities of the police force, earning her the title of ‘Veerbala’ (Brave Girl). On June 19th, 1947, Nana Bhai Khant and Senga Bhai Bhil, who were teachers at Rastapal, a small tribal village near Dungarpur, were ordered to close their school immediately. However, the teachers refused to comply with the orders. As a consequence, one of the teachers was killed by a State police officer, while the other was tied to a jeep and dragged on a rough road.
Witnessing her teacher being dragged to death, Kali Bai became desperate to save him and picked up a sickle to sever the rope. The police then fired at Kali Bai, and she bravely fell down on the ground, sacrificing her life.
