Kanuparthi Varalakshmamma (Aged 81) was born to Palaparthi Seshayya and Hanumayamma on 6th October 1896 in Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh, India. He was an activist of the Indian Freedom Movement. She was one of seven boys and three girls and married Kanuparthi Hanumantha Rao in 1909. Her husband wholeheartedly supported her activities.
At the age of 12, Varalakshmamma became involved in the Indian freedom movement and followed Mahatma Gandhi. She worked towards improving women’s situations and encouraged their active participation in the freedom movement.
In 1920, Varalakshmamma began her literary career with a series of articles titled Maa Chettuneeda Muchatlu (Chatting in the shade of our tree), published in the Andhra Patrika weekly. In this column, she discussed significant issues such as education for women, traditions, politics, and current trends in various areas. The column was popular and ran for six years.
In 1928, Veralakshmamma started a new column, Sarada Lekhalu (Letters from Sarada), under the pseudonym Sarada in the new magazine Gruhalakshmi. She addressed the letters to an imaginary friend named Kalpalata and discussed issues such as the Sharda Act, divorce law, the khadi movement, Non-cooperation, erasing untouchability, and unfounded customs. To promote women’s education, vocational skills, and improve their social status, Varalakshmamma founded a women’s organization called Stree Hitaishini Mandali.
Varalakshmamma wrote poetry, stories, novels, and plays, which were broadcast on All India Radio and Doordarshan (India TV). She also participated in literary meets with high-ranking poets of her time. He passed Away by August 6, 1978.
