Kovai Ayyamuthu (Aged 77) was born in December 1898 in Kangayam, Tirupur district, Tamil Nadu. He was also known as Kovai Kadar Ayyamuthu and was a Gandhian, Indian freedom fighter, and writer. Ayyamuthu was born in the region of Tirupur district to Angannan and Marakkal, and he married Govindammal in 1921.
Ayyamuthu was an important leader in the Sarvodaya Movement. He was mentored by C. Rajagopalachari and was a good friend of EVR Periyar. Govindammal actively participated in various agitations, and the couple were jailed numerous times. In 1924, Kovai Ayyamuthu participated in the Vaikom Satyagraha and played a pivotal role in the Kadar organization in the Coimbatore region.
After independence, Ayyamuthu and Govindammal set up “Gandhi Pannai” on the Coimbatore Pollachi road, and their house was named “Rajaji Illam.” Ayyamuthu passed away on 21 December 1975.
