Lala HukamChand Jain

(1816 – 1858) – (Haryana)

Lala Hukumchand Jain (Aged 42) was born in 1816 in the famous Kanungo family in Hansi (Hissar), Haryana, India. Due to his knowledge and intelligence, he held a good position in the court of Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.

In 1857, the Mughal emperor assured Hukumchand Ji of help in fighting against the British, but the assistance did not arrive, and his small army had to fight the British with simple weapons. Despite this setback, he was not discouraged and continued to search for ways to overthrow the British.

Lala Hukumchand and his colleague Mirza Myner Baig wrote a secret letter to the Mughal Emperor in Farsi, requesting weapons and help for fighting the British. During this time, the British captured Delhi and found the letter with the signatures of Lalaji and Baig. Both were arrested, including Lalaji’s 13-year-old nephew, Fakirchand. The court released Fakirchand.

On January 19, 1858, Lala Hukumchand Ji and Mirza Baig were hanged in front of Hukumchand Ji’s house. The nephew, Fakirchand, was hanged forcefully by the British. The British were so enraged that they did not give the bodies to their relatives. Instead, they buried Hukumchand Ji’s body and burned Mirza Baig’s body to hurt religious sentiments.
