M.N. Jois

(1905 – 2002) – (Karnataka)

M.N. Jois (Aged 97), also known as the “Lion of Mysore,” was born on December 14th, 1905 in Mysuru, Karnataka, India. He was an Indian freedom fighter from Mysore State who participated in various movements to overthrow the British government as a legislator, politician, administrator, and educator. In Mysore, there is an M.N. Jois Circle, and the street where he lived is also named after him. On March 28th, 2002, he passed away at the age of 98.

In describing his childhood and inspiration, Jois stated, “My father, Shri. Narayana Jois, was a teacher at Mari Mallappa’s High School in Mysore, where I also studied. Shri Venkatakrishnaiah, then the Head Master of the school, was better known as ‘Tathiah – the Grand Old Man of Mysore.’ This title was given to him by none other than Gandhiji in 1926.”
