Mahabiri Devi

(Uttar Pradesh)

Mahabiri Devi a courageous woman, was born in the Bangi community which works in gardens, in Mundbar village, located in the Muzaffarnagar district of western Uttar Pradesh. Despite growing up in poverty, Devi was talented and intelligent, and her name suited her bravery. Living in an oppressed society, she had to fight against the exploitation of the British and various social ills. At a young age, she established the Women’s Association to protect women and children from abuse and encourage them to live with dignity.

During the 1857 fight against British rule in northern India, Mahabiri Devi bravely participated in the struggle. When the British besieged Muzaffarnagar, she formed a group of 22 women armed with iron weapons such as the Katta and Grossa, and attacked the British soldiers. Although Devi and her female soldiers successfully killed some British soldiers, they were eventually mercilessly killed by the British.
