Mayandi Bharathi (Aged 98) was an Indian journalist and revolutionary who participated in the independence movement. He was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu in 1917. He held various posts in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) for a long time and believed in Gandhian philosophy. He was the president of the Chennai Province Extremist Youth Wing.
Bharathi was imprisoned 13 times during 1942-1944 for participating in the Quit India Movement. He was also falsely implicated in the Tirunelveli conspiracy case and initially sentenced to life imprisonment, but later acquitted.
He worked as an editor for various communist print media such as Janasakthi and Theekathir. He was one of the first people to congratulate U Sagayam, an IAS officer, when he returned to Madurai to investigate the multi-crore granite scam. Mayandi Bharathi passed away in 2015.
