Ondiveeran Pagadai

(★ – 1771) – (Tamilnadu)

Ondiveeran Pagadai, also known as Ondi Veeran, was an Indian commander-in-chief who fought against the British East India Company in Tamil Nadu. He hailed from the Arunthathiyar community and is revered as a hero by them. He passed away on August 20, 1771.

Under the pressure of the Arunthathiyars, the Government of Tamil Nadu decided to build a memorial for him in Tirunelveli district. The community’s persistent efforts to obtain a monument included public protests. The foundation stone for the memorial was laid in 2011. To honor Ondiveeran, India Post released a commemorative postage stamp of denomination Rs. 5 on August 20, 2022.

In the mid-2000s, the Dalit community in Tamil Nadu petitioned the government to establish a memorial for Ondiveeran, and this included public protests. The government spent 49 lakh rupees on the memorial, and the foundation stone was laid in 2011 by the Minister for Information and Public Relations, Parithi Ilamvazhuthi.
