Pabitra Mohan Pradhan (Aged 80), who was born on February 8th, 1908, in Poipal village, Odisha, India, was a freedom fighter who played a leading role in the Praja Mandal Movement in the princely states of Dhenkanal and Talcher. He organized peasants to assert their land rights.
During the Quit India Movement in 1942, he participated and was later arrested. He fled from the Talcher Jail in Odisha and established a parallel government. The colonial regime declared a prize of ten thousand rupees to catch him, either dead or alive. He remained underground for five years until independence.
He wrote an autobiography titled “Mukti Pathe Sainika” (A Soldier on the Path of Liberation). Pabitra Mohan Pradhan served as an Executive Councillor for the princely state of Orissa, a member of the Orissa Legislative Assembly from 1950 to 1970, a Minister in the Orissa Cabinet four times, and the Deputy Chief Minister from 1967 to 1970.
