Ramdas Gandhi

(1897 – 1969) – (Maharashtra)

Ramdas Mohandas Gandhi (Aged 72) the third son of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was born on 2 January 1897 in South Africa. He outlived his parents and all of his brothers. Ramdas and his wife Nirmala had three children: Sumitra Gandhi, Kanu Gandhi, and Usha Gandhi. He actively participated in his father’s Indian independence movement, despite having no taste for asceticism. He took part in the grueling civil protests of the 1930s, which led to numerous jailings and had serious effects on his health.

Although raised in South Africa, Ramdas never adjusted to the idealistic poverty imposed by his father. At Mahatma’s funeral, Ramdas Gandhi was the one who lit the fire to start the cremation, as his father had wished. He was joined by his younger brother Devdas Gandhi at the funeral. Ramdas passed away on 14 April 1969.
