Ramji Gond

(★ – 1860) – (Telangana)

Ramji Gond was a Gond chief who ruled the tribal areas in present-day Adilabad, Telangana, India. The areas under his rule included Nirmal, Utnoor, Chennuru, and Asifabad. He was one of the legendary Adivasi leaders who fought a guerilla war against the British, who sought to capture the Gond kingdom. Eventually, he was attacked and defeated, along with 1000 soldiers, and they were soon hanged to death.

Ramji Gond was hanged by a tree at Nirmal, a town in the state where the Rohilla rebellions were prevalent, by 9 April 1860. The tree is still said to be known as the Ramji Chettu.
