Sankaradas Swamigal (Aged 55) was born on September 7, 1867, in Tuticorin to Damodaran Pillai and Kanthimathi Ammal. He learned Tamil from his father and later, Palani Dandapani Swamigal, before working as an accountant at a salt factory.
He was a Tamil writer, actor, playwright, songwriter, and drama producer. His boys’ company launched the careers of many Tamil artists such as S. G. Kittappa, K. B. Sundarambal, M. R. Radha, S. V. Venkataraman, and K. Sarangapani. Sankaradas Swamigal is recognized as one of the pioneers of Tamil theatre, along with Pammal Sambandha Mudaliar. His plays and writings emphasized patriotism and played an important role in inspiring people to support the Indian independence movement.
Swamigal was primarily interested in composing Tamil venbas and songs. In 1891, he quit his job at the age of twenty-four and started acting in plays with the support of two drama producers, Ramudu Iyer and Kalyanarama Iyer. Later, Swamigal joined the drama company of Samy Naidu. Manpoondia Pillai encouraged and insisted Swamigal to start writing plays, which led to his first success, Pammal Sambandha Mudaliar’s Manoharan, for which he wrote the songs. He passed away by 1922.
