Tehal Singh was born in the village of Ramvala in the Amritsar district of Punjab. His father’s name was Ganda Singh. He was among the Sikh migrants who boarded the Japanese ship Komagata Maru to travel to Canada, but the ship was forced to return to India and docked at Budge Budge near Calcutta. In the ensuing chaos that broke out between the passengers and colonial police on 29 September 1914, he was shot and later died in the hospital.
