He participated in a procession of Congress volunteers who had gathered to celebrate Independence Day on 26 January 1931 in Begusarai. However, the authorities suddenly declared it unlawful and arrested its leaders. In anger, the procession attacked the police force, who retaliated by resorting to firing. Kantaha was shot and sustained serious bullet wounds, and he passed away in the hospital on 27 January 1931.
