Trilochan Pokhrel, also known as ‘Bandey Pokhrel’ in Sikkim and North Bengal, was the first Indian independence activist from Sikkim. He was born in Tareythang Takchang Busty, East Sikkim. Pokhrel was deeply influenced by the principles of peace and non-violence that were central to Mahatma Gandhi’s movements.
He actively participated in Gandhi’s movements, including the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Civil Disobedience Movement, and the Quit India Movement. Mr. Pokhrel had great faith in Gandhi’s teachings of leading a simple life. Pokhrel is credited with popularizing the concept of Swadeshi among the Sikkimese peasantry. He was the first Sikkimese freedom fighter to challenge British hegemony, as Sikkim was a protectorate state of British India since the signing of the Treaty of Tumlong in 1861. This had a significant impact on Sikkim’s sovereignty, with the appointment of Political officer John Claude White leading to the establishment of new landholdings in Sikkim.
Due to the direct or indirect influence of the British in Sikkim, Trilochan Pokhrel became involved in the mainstream Indian Freedom Movement. He passed away in 1969.
