Veeran Sundaralingam

(1770 – 1799) – (Tamilnadu)

Sundaralinga Kudumbanar (Aged 29) also known as “Veeran” Sundaralingam Kudumbanar, was born in 1770 in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India. He was an 18th-century CE general who fought alongside the Poligar Veerapandiya Kattabomman in their struggle against the British East India Company. While most historical accounts suggest that he was killed in 1799 during the First Polygar War, some believe that he died in the Second Polygar War (1800-1) while supporting Kattabomman’s younger brother, Oomaithurai.

Sundaralingam belonged to the Devendrakula Velalar, an agricultural community in Tamil Nadu. In 2009, the Tamil Nadu government announced plans to construct a memorial in his honor at Governagiri.
