Yasin Fateh was a resident of Bombay City, Maharashtra, who took part in a large procession to commemorate the birth of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on 23 January 1946. The procession started from Chaupatty along Sandhurst Road, Bombay. However, the marchers were stopped by the police who had put up a barricade on the road. The police wanted the procession to be diverted towards Vithalbhai Road, as notified 12 hours before.
Despite the police’s insistence, the marchers were determined to continue along the original route and sat down near the barricade to protest any diversion. When tear gas failed to disperse the crowd, the police resorted to indiscriminate firing, resulting in Yasin Fateh receiving a fatal bullet wound. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on the same day.
