Sanre Munda was a resident of Santhal Parganas, Bihar (now in Jharkhand). He was baptized in his childhood and his Christian name was Suleman. His mother’s name was Maki and he had a younger brother named Jai Masi. Sanre Munda participated in the Birsa movement from 1899 to 1901 and was responsible for killing constable Etkedih Jayram Singh with an arrow and an axe. He was sentenced to capital punishment for this violent act and was hanged on 22 October 1901.
