Gopala Pillai was born on May 3, 1915, in the village of Ittava, in Kollam district, Kerala. He participated in the disturbances in Kadakkal over the State Congress movement for responsible government on September 30, 1938. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement, but was released in 1943. However, Pillai passed away shortly after his release.
