A.M. Saravanam

(1902 – 1975) – (Tamilnadu)

A.M. Saravanam (Aged 73) was born in 1902 in Udhagamandalam, Ooty, Tamil Nadu, India.  Ooty and the Nilgiris district were the second capital of the British and were pioneers in the period of white supremacy. Despite being born and raised in a backward community, Saravanam finished 8th grade in the Nilgiris district of Uttamakandalam and became an agro-businessman.

He was an Indian Congress politician and served in the Congress Party from 1936 to 1956. During this time, he continued to serve as Ooty Town Congress, Nilagiri District Congress Secretary, and Nilagiri District Congress President. Saravanam actively engaged his wife in the freedom struggle as well.

When Subhash Chandra Bose announced the Jai Hind slogan in 1942, Saravanam named his son Jaihinda to support the cause. He was proud to organize a meeting with the majority of his people when Mahatma Gandhi visited the Nilgiris district in 1934. During the meeting, the Pillaiyar temple built by his community members was opened. Later, he presided over the centenary function where Mahatma Gandhi sat in the same place.

Saravanam was sentenced to several years in imprisonment and spent most of his time in the Nilgiris District Jails of Ooty, Coimbatore, Trichy, Vellore, and Madras. He was once imprisoned alongside former minister Kakkan.

Fearing his active involvement, white supremacists arrested him and landed him in a jungle inhabited by wild animals, 50 miles from Ooty. He managed to escape. After independence, Kamaraj insisted on appointing him as a member of the Most Aboriginal Welfare Committee, but Saravanam refused due to family circumstances.

During Indira Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister, the Congress barrage broke, and Saravanam was approached by the Indira Congress as the district leader. He headed and cooperated with the Nilgiris District Laundry Workers Union and was awarded the Copper Sword and Commendation Bond by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He passed away on 7th December 1975.
