Abbas Tyabji

(1854 – 1936) – (Gujarart)

Abbas Tyabji (Aged 82) was born in February 1854 in Baroda State, where his father served the Gaekwad Maharaja. He received his education in England, where he resided for eleven years. Tyabji was an Indian freedom fighter from Gujarat and an associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He also served as the Chief Justice of Baroda State.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre had a profound impact on Tyabji, leading him to become a loyal follower of Gandhi and a strong supporter of the Indian National Congress. In 1928, he supported Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the Bardoli Satyagraha, which included a boycott of British cloth and goods.

Mahatma Gandhi appointed Tyabji, who was seventy-six years old at the time, to replace him as the leader of the Salt Satyagraha on May 4th, 1930, after Gandhi’s arrest. However, Tyabji was arrested soon afterward and imprisoned by the British Indian Government.

Following his death, Gandhi wrote an article in the Harijan newspaper titled “G. O. M. of Gujarat” (Grand Old Man of Gujarat) in honor of Tyabji. He passed away by 9 June 1936.
