Abdul Jalil (Aged 34) was a teacher and a member of the Indian Independence League (IIL) who played an important role in mobilizing the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to support the Indian Independence movement during the Japanese occupation of the Islands in the early 1940s. However, he was arrested and accused of spying for the British in October 1943, and was subsequently detained in the Cellular Jail.
During his detention, Abdul Jalil was subjected to torture and ultimately killed by a Japanese firing squad on 30 January 1944. His death was a tragic loss for the independence movement in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, but his contributions to the cause of Indian Independence will never be forgotten.
