Acharya Harihara

(1879 – 1971) – (Odisha)

Acharya Harihara (Aged 92) was born on 1879 in Sriramchandrapur village, Sakhigopal, Puri District, Odisha, India. His father’s name was Mahadev Brahma and his mother’s name was Sraddhadevi. He was one of the leading soldiers of the Indian freedom struggle. After completing his primary studies in the village, he studied at the Puri District School.

From his early childhood, Acharya Harihar was dedicated to social service, and he laid the foundation stone of associated social service in the land of Odisha. In 1930, he, along with Gopabandhu Choudhury, participated in the Salt Satyagraha and marched on foot from Cuttack to Inchudi at Balasore to break the salt law. Gopabandhu was arrested at Kakatia village, after which Acharya Harihar led the procession to Include. He was arrested along with all other satyagrahis and spent six months at Hazaribag jail in Bihar. He was jailed many times for his resistance to British rule.

In 1942, during the Quit India Movement, he and other freedom fighters were arrested because of their active participation and imprisoned at Berhampur jail. After India’s independence, he continued to work for the welfare of the people of Orissa. He died on 29th February 1971.
