Ahiraj Singh, a JCO in the Ramgarh Battalion, participated in the resistance against the English East India Company during the First War of Independence of 1857 in Chatra, Bihar (now in Jharkhand). He was on duty with the guns when the fighting began, as attested by others. However, since the rebel artillery was no match for the powerful English battalions, he and his comrades were killed in action. Even those soldiers who managed to escape could not survive.
