Amar Shahid Bandhu Singh

(1833 – 1858) – (Uttar Pradesh)

Bandhu Singh (Aged 25) born on May 1, 1833 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, was from a Kshatriya (Rajput) Zamindar family, the son of Babu Shiv Prasad Singh of Dumari Riyasat. He fought as a guerrilla against the British Raj in India and was known as Amar Shahid Bandhu Singh. He had five brothers named Dal Hamman Singh, Tejai Singh, Fateh Singh, Jheenak Singh, and Karia Singh, and he was a devotee of Tarkulaha Devi.

Ultimately, the British arrested him, along with Shivgobind Chand of Chillupar, Gorakhpur. On August 12, 1858, Bandhu Singh was publicly hanged at Ali Nagar Chauraha in Gorakhpur, but Shivgobind Chand managed to escape to Nepal to his daughter Samrajya Laxmi Devi of Nepal.

Every year, a month-long Mela (funfair) starts from Chaitra Ramnavami at the Tarkulaha Devi Temple, which Amar Shahid Bandhu Singh frequented. People from far-flung locations visit the Tarkulaha Mela to buy their annual requirements of Garam Masala (Indian spices) and enjoy traditional Nautanki (drama), Nag Kanya shows, and small circuses.
