Babu Shedmake

(1833 – 1858) – (Maharashtra)

Babu Shedmake (Aged 22) born in 1833, was a Gond chieftain from Central India and a pro-independence rebel. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he led the revolt in the Chanda district. Born into a Gond zamindar family, he fought multiple battles against the British over seven months in 1858 and was hanged for rebellion against the British government.

The Gond community still celebrates Baburao Shedmake’s life and his revolt against foreign rule. His name is given the sobriquet “veer,” which means brave, as a mark of his bravery. His birth and death anniversaries are observed annually throughout the Gondwana region.
