Baiza Bai

(1784 – 1863) – (Maharashtra)

Baiza Bai (Aged 79) was born in Kagal, Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India in 1784. At the age of 14, in February 1798, she was married to Daulat Rao Scindia, the ruler of Gwalior, in Poona. Known as a superb horsewoman, she had been trained in sword and spear fighting. Baiza Bai accompanied her husband during the Maratha wars with the British, and she even fought against Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington, at the Battle of Assaye.

During the British campaign against the Pindaris, she urged her husband to support the Peshwa Baji Rao II against them. Even when Daulat Rao submitted to British demands, she briefly left him, accusing him of cowardice. Baiza Bai was also fiercely opposed to the Scindia surrender of Ajmer to the British. She passed away in Gwalior in 1863.
