Benoy Basu

(1908 – 1930) – (West Bengal)

Benoy Krishna Basu (Aged 22) also known as Benoy Basu or Benoy Bose, was born on 11 September 1908 in the village of Rohitbhog in the Munshiganj District, which was then in British India. His father, Rebatimohan Basu, was an engineer. Benoy was an Indian revolutionary who fought against British rule in India and launched an attack on the Secretariat Building, also known as the Writers’ Building, at the Dalhousie square in Kolkata, along with Badal Gupta and Dinesh Chandra Gupta.

On 8 December 1930, Benoy Basu, along with Dinesh Gupta and Badal Gupta, dressed in European costume, entered the Writers’ Building and shot dead Simpson. In response, police in the building started firing at them. What ensued was a brief gunfight between the three young revolutionaries and the police. During the shooting, some other officers, like Twynam, Prentice, and Nelson, suffered injuries. Soon, the police overpowered them. However, the three did not wish to be arrested. Badal took Potassium cyanide, while Benoy and Dinesh shot themselves with their own revolvers. Benoy Basu and Badal died on the spot. Only Dinesh Gupta survived, but he was later executed.
