Bhagwandas Amrutlal

(1918 – 1946) – (Maharashtra)

Amrutlal Bhagwandas (Aged 28) born in 1918, served in the Royal Indian Navy in Bombay. He participated in one of the demonstrations supporting the Royal Indian Navy rating rebellion.

On 18 February 1946, the ratings of the RIN battleship HMIS Talwar, which was docked in Bombay, went on strike due to bad food and adverse living conditions. They captured naval trucks, hoisted Congress, League, and Red flags on them, and urged the people of Bombay to support their revolt. This was the greatest naval revolt in history, which spread to 78 ships and 22 units along the Indian coastline.

In response to their call, several processions were held in Bombay in the subsequent days. However, during a procession held on 22 February 1946, Amrutlal Bhagwandas was sternly injured by a police bullet and subsequently died from his injuries in a hospital on the same day.
