Bishambhar Nath Pande

(1906 – 1998) – (Uttar Pradesh)

Bishambhar Nath Pande (Aged 92) was born on December 23, 1906 in India. He was a freedom fighter, social worker, and parliamentarian who devoted his life to the cause of national integration and the spread of Gandhian principles. Pande was a member of the Indian National Congress and was a close associate of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, as well as Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi. He was a firm believer in Gandhian philosophy and served as the vice-chairman of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS) for 18 years. This organization aims to spread Gandhian principles and philosophy globally. Pande also gave lectures in several countries, including Japan, Russia, Germany, and Canada, on the life and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.

In recognition of his achievements in social work, Pande was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976. He also received the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration in 1996 from Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, for his lifetime contribution towards promoting Hindu-Muslim unity in India. Additionally, he was awarded the Khuda Baksh Award for his work on the composite culture of India.

Pande spent a significant part of his life researching secularism with the aim of promoting unity among all religions in India. He wrote several books as part of his research. Pande was married to Shanta Pande, a former freedom fighter, and had one child and two grandchildren. He passed away on June 1, 1998 in Delhi, India.
