Brij Mangal Rai

(1914 – 1998) – (Uttar Pradesh)

Brij Mangal Rai (Aged 84) was a freedom fighter who, after independence, established several educational institutions in Ghazipur district. Despite being an important political leader in the ruling Congress party, he chose to only focus on social services, living the life of a yogi and not even accepting the pension of freedom fighters.

Brijmangal Rai was a brilliant student who passed 6th standard from Karimuddinpur Middle School in 1926 AD. However, due to his devotion to the motherland, he left school at a very young age to become a freedom fighter. He quickly rose to prominence in the Congress sangathan due to his perseverance, commitment, and hard work. At the age of only 22 years, he was nominated as the mandal secretary of the Congress sangathan, which invited the attention of oppressive and brutal British government agencies, forcing him to go underground for several years. Despite many raids and tip-offs, he was never arrested. However, the police started harassing his family and sealed his house, which only unlocked after independence.

In 1952, Brijmangal Rai established Shri Sarvoday Inter College in Khardiha village, which he turned into an educational center by establishing a BTC training center and a Degree College. Due to his pioneering efforts, thousands of rural youth got the opportunity for better education, and many of these students achieved great success in their professional careers. Although he never contested any assembly or Lok Sabha election, he ensured the victory of the Congress candidate from his assembly constituency for five continuous terms.

Brijmangal Rai was a devotee of Bhagwan Shiv, and he lived a disciplined yogi’s life. As a true Gandhian, he only wore khadi dhoti as his attire, hardly wearing any clothes in the upper part of his body. Although he was a political person, he lived an unblemished life for 84 years. Due to his disciplined life, he never experienced health problems until his very old age. Many students from his schools and colleges are retiring from their jobs today, and they all bow their heads in respect to him. They admit that whatever they achieved in their lives was only possible because of the educational infrastructure established and developed by Brijmangal Rai.
