Salem C. Vijayaraghavachariar (Aged 92) also known as C. Vijayaraghavachariar, was born on June 18, 1852, in Chengalpattu, TamilNadu, India. He was a civil servant, reformer, Indian politician, and lawyer. In 1875, he worked as a teacher in Madras State College. He entered politics as a member of the Salem Municipal Council in 1882, became a member of the Madras State Council in 1895, and a member of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1913.
In 1882, he was convicted of the Salem riots and sentenced to ten years in the Andaman Islands. He was exiled and lost his city council post. After being released from prison and pleading his innocence, he was hailed as the “Man of Saletu” and the “Lion of South India”. He passed away on April 19, 1944.
