Chakra Bisoi was a legendary and omnipresent rebel who was seemingly present at most of the sites of rebellion against British rule during the first half of the 19th century. From 1846 to 1856, he led the revolt of the hill tribes against the British, which shook the British Authority in Odisha.
Chakra Bisoi not only fought against the British for their interference in the socio-religious practices of the Kandh, but also for causing undue suffering to them. Despite their pursuit, the British were never able to apprehend this valiant freedom fighter. The sufferings and sacrifices of Chakra Bisoi have become a saga of patriotism.
