Dr. Gaya Prasad Katiyar (Aged 93) was born on 20 June 1900 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. During his student days, he joined the Hindustan Republican Association/Army. It is said that Bhagat Singh and Rajguru celebrated Holi in his village in March 1926. Following party instructions, Gaya Prasad opened a medical shop in Ferozepur under the name of Dr. B.S. Nigam. It was here where Bhagat Singh cut his hair in 1928.
Together with Shiv Verma and Jaidev Kapoor, he moved to Saharanpur to establish a bomb factory. However, he was arrested on 15 May 1929. He was found guilty in the Lahore Conspiracy Case and was sentenced to life imprisonment in Andaman jail. He went on hunger strikes in Lahore and Andaman jails. He was released after serving 17 years in 1946. After India gained independence, he joined the leftist movement and was imprisoned for two years for participating in the workers’ movement in 1958. He passed away on 10 February 1993 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.
