Dwarka Prasad Mishra

(1901 – 1988) – (Madhya Pradesh)

Pt. Dwarka Prasad Mishra (Aged 87) was born in 1901. He was an Indian National Congress politician and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. He was also a writer, great freedom fighter, and diplomat, and belonged to the village of Padari in Unnao. Mishra became the Chief Minister of M.P. after Ravi Shanker Shukla. Mishra was a politician, journalist, and author. He had edited three Hindi journals: Lokmat, Sharda, and Saarthi.

His epic poem Krishnayana was critically acclaimed. In 1937, he was elected as an MLA and joined the cabinet in Central Provinces and Berar under the Chief Ministership of N B Khare. Mishra was sacked by Khare, resulting in disciplinary action against Khare by the Indian National Congress and his ouster as Chief Minister. Mishra then joined the new cabinet under Ravi Shankar Shukla and served until October 1939.

He served two terms as the Chief Minister of the state from 30 September 1963 to 8 March 1967 and from 9 March 1967 to 29 July 1967. He was also active in the struggle for Indian independence and went to jail for the cause for the first time at the age of 19 in 1920. His books evoked critical response owing to his being an insider of power politics in the period after Nehru’s death. He passed away in 1988.
