Faridul Haq Ansari

Faridul Haq Ansari (Aged 71) born on 1 July 1895, Yusufpur, Utter Pradesh, India. He was popularly known as Farid Ansari, was a lawyer and politician who actively participated in the Indian independence movement. He was a prominent socialist leader who received special mention in Jayprakash Narayan’s writings. He served two terms as a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha. His father, Nezamul Haq Ansari, was a zamindar. Faridul Haq received his education from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, Aligarh Muslim University, and Oxford University. After returning to India, he started practicing as a lawyer at the Delhi High Court in 1925.

In 1927, he joined the Indian National Congress and served as the Secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee. He was the cousin of former President of the Indian National Congress, Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari. Faridul Haq actively participated in the Indian independence movement and was arrested many times. He was one of the prominent leaders of the Quit India Movement who was sent to jail during 1942–1945.

As a barrister, he pleaded the defense in the Meerut Conspiracy Case Trail (1929–33) along with Jawahar Lal Nehru and Kailash Nath Katju as a member of the Central Defense Committee set up by the Congress Working Committee. Within the Congress Party, he was known for his left-leaning. He was elected as a member of the policy and program drafting committee of the Congress Socialist Party.

After India’s independence, he joined the Socialist Party (India) and became a member of its national executive. In 1952, he became a member of the Praja Socialist Party and served as the Joint Secretary of the Praja Socialist Party during 1954–1958. Faridul Haq, along with Asaf Ali, made a major contribution to the expansion of the Congress Party. They initiated a mass contact campaign, which resulted in many Muslims joining the Congress Party and deserting the membership of the Muslim League. After independence, Faridul Haq served two terms as a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha between 1958 and 1966. He passed away on April 4, 1966, in Delhi due to coronary thrombosis.
