G.S. Lakshmanan

G.S. Lakshmanan Iyer (Aged 93) was an Indian freedom fighter born in Gobichettipalayam, Tamil Nadu, India in 1918. He was imprisoned for over five years during India’s struggle for independence. He is widely recognized for his contributions towards the betterment of the poor and oppressed, and he donated most of his assets towards that cause. He distributed land worth hundreds of crores, in today’s money, to build houses for the oppressed.

Lakshmanan Iyer involved his wife in the Satyagraha movement, and she was also imprisoned with him. He served as the chairman of Gobichettipalayam municipality twice, from 1952-1955 and 1986-1991. During his tenure, Gobichettipalayam became the first city in India to ban the manual scavenging system. He helped Dalits become debt-free and ensured that they lived in comfortable houses on clean, wide streets with modern toilets. He passed away due to illness in January 2011 at the age of 93, and thousands of people gathered to pay their last respects.

A documentary film called “Oyamari” was produced about the life of Lakshmana Iyer by writer S. Balamurugan. In 2018, the Governor of Tamil Nadu unveiled a statue of G.S. Lakshman Iyer in the district.
