General Thangal

(1806 – 1891) – (Manipur)

General Thangal (Aged 33) a Naga tribal from the Senapati district of Manipur, India.,  was one of the most prominent heroes of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. During the reign of Maharaja Chandrakriti Singh, he was the most powerful member of the Durbar.

After Maharaja Chandrakriti Singh’s death in 1886, Yubraj Tikendrajit and General Thangal revolted in 1890, drove out the reigning king Surchandra, and installed Kulachandra as the new ruler of Manipur.

The British deputed Mr. Quinton and his associates to Manipur to demand that the King hand over Yuvraj Tikendrajit. The Anglo-Manipur War broke out on April 27, 1891, and the British occupied Manipur after defeating the Manipuris. General Thangal surrendered to the British on May 7, 1891. He was hanged to death on August 13, 1891, at Pheida-pung, Imphal, Manipur, India.
