Gurbax Singh Dhillon (Aged 92) was born on 18 March 1914 in Algon, Tarn Taran district, Punjab, India. In 1933, he joined the British Army and was enlisted in the Punjab Regiment, serving in many countries during World War II. While stationed in Singapore, he and his senior colleague, Captain Mohan Singh, decided to form the Indian National Army (INA) with the help of Indian Prisoners of War held by the Japanese forces, who offered to release them. He actively participated in the INA’s operations under the command of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
After the INA surrendered to British forces on 17 May 1945, all officers and soldiers were arrested. Col. Dhillon, along with Major-General Shah Nawaz Khan and Col. Prem Kumar Sehgal, was tried in a Military Court in Red Fort, Delhi. Due to mass public support, all three were acquitted. After his acquittal, Col. Dhillon settled in Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh and was honored with Padma Bhushan in 1998. He passed away on 6 February 2006 in Gwalior.
